The main challenges of high volume manufacturing are setting up process from fabrication to assembly, controlling quality in minimum efforts and time and maximizing yield. NNTS can get involved from design stage of product for guiding design team to follow guidelines for DFM, DFA and DFT. This lead to smooth transition from development to manufacturing phase. NNTS can take complete ownership of manufacturing of product which involves maintaining the BOM, getting PCBs fabricated and assembled, getting mechanical parts constructed as per drawings, integrating electronics and mechanical parts and validating the product using test fixture.
- Industrialization:
- Review of design files of all parts of the product including PCBs and drawings for mechanical parts from DFM, DFA and DFT perspective
- Incorporating design modifications for ease of fabrication and assembly of parts
- Including updates for supporting automated testing to an extent possible
- BOM Optimization:
- Review BOM and ensure that all required information are present for all parts
- Ensure that Approved Vendor List (AVL) is available
- Identification of long lead time parts
- Identification of exact alternates of all possible parts and getting approval from design team
- Identification of custom parts
- Validate availability of all parts
- Ensure that change log is maintained for BOM
- Vendor Development:
- Identify different manufacturers / vendors for all parts in BOM
- Evaluate facilities and manufacturing process of manufacturers and select few of them
- Get quotations from manufacturers and vendors for all parts
- Provide necessary trainings to manufacturers for testing custom parts
- Continuous interactions with vendors and manufacturers for supply chain maintenance and improvements
- Setting-up Process:
- Ensure to have all documentation of product in place required for manufacturing
- Setup material purchase process for all parts in BOM
- Setup process for getting custom parts fabricated and assembled
- Setup product assembly process as per assembly document
- Setup testing process – perform testing and recording results
- Setup quality check process at various stages of assembly right from verification of purchased parts to final testing
- Test Fixture:
- Test fixture design for complete product and / or sub-assemblies as required
- It may have facility to test multiple products / sub-assemblies at a time
- Ensure ease of mounting and removal of device under test for minimizing test time
- Calibration facility to be incorporated, if any
- Test fixture fabrication, assembly and thorough verification
- Detailed test procedure document from mounting of product for testing to test results recording
- Pilot Production:
- Production of few products following the complete manufacturing process from material purchase to final testing
- Providing samples to few select customers for testing at end user’s environment
- Getting feedback from customers and plan for improvements as required
- Validation:
- Validation of pilot production using test fixtures
- Analysis of test results and brain storming for root cause
- Calculation of yield based on Pilot production results
- Process improvements for improving yield
